In the Czech Republic health insurance is compulsory by law and since 1/1/2010 Czech health insurance is mandatory for visa applications.
You are free to choose a GP and the care provided by a GP is free of charge at the point of use.
As a patient you register with a GP of your choice and you are free to change your GP.
Czech health insurance normally covers preventive care, diagnostic care, hospital care, including rehabilitation and care of chronic diseases, dental care , medicaments and medical aids and patient transport.
Some certain cosmetic and acupuncture treatments and homeopathic products are excluded from cover.
You are free to choose which health insurance company you want, but can only change your insurer once a year. Changes are made on the 1st calendar day of the quarter.
There are three levels of the regulation charges:
1) 30 CZK
for the visit to a general practitioner, gynecologist, dentist, specialist (outpatient care), during which a clinical investigation is made and for issuing prescribed medication, that is fully or partially covered by the health insurance.
2) 60 CZK
a day for a stay in hospital or health resort (spa) (the day on which the insured person was admitted to hospital and the day on which the insured person was discharged from hospital count as one day.).
3) 90 CZK
for emergency care that was provided by the first aid medical service including first aid medical service provided by dentists and for hospital emergency service provided on Saturday, Sunday and holidays and working days between 17.00 and 7.00 (unless the insured person is subsequently admitted to hospital).
For 2009 the minimum monthly payments for health insurance is 1,590 Kc
Your payments must be paid by the 8th of every month.
Failure to pay on time usually result in a penalty from your insurance company, accrued daily.
Payments for the first year are for a minimum of 1,590 Kc per month, after your first year your payments are adjusted according to your earnings for the previous year.
